2022 SCHOLARSHIP

Submission deadline is April 30th, 2022!

Essay Guidelines:

There are numerous rulings in the courts that allow police to use a variety of psychological ploys to extract confessions from a suspect, including deception. A regularly used type of deception is presenting false information to the suspect. Most times this is done verbally, but on occasion suspects are presented with false written documents. Recently in Hampton Roads, investigators utilized a false document created by them to extract a confession. The confession was challenged, but the court ruled in favor of the police department. However, going forward their Chief mandated they will no longer utilize falsified written documentation during interrogations.

Research recent and past challenged cases where this specific tactic was utilized. State the pros and cons and decide if this tactic should be utilized or not and explain your decision.
